Remembering S R Nathan (1924-2016)

My fellow Singaporeans,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you that our sixth President Mr S R Nathan has passed away peacefully on 22 August 2016. He was 92.

Mr Nathan served Singapore in many capacities – as a social worker, trade union activist, diplomat and our longest serving President (1999-2011). In all his duties, he held himself admirably, always putting the interest of those he served above himself.

In the 1974 Laju Hijacking incident, when four armed men attacked the Shell Oil Refinery on Pulau Bukom Besar, Mr Nathan risked his life by leading a 13-man delegation to accompany the hijackers on a flight to Kuwait as guarantors, in exchange for the release of the hostages. Under his leadership, the crisis was ended without any loss of life.

As President, Mr Nathan founded the President’s Challenge, now an annual community-based fundraising charity event, which raised over $160 million for the disadvantaged and underprivileged in Singapore. Mr Nathan himself came from humble beginnings and worked to put himself through school. He went on to graduate from the University of Malaya and join the Singapore Civil Service.

Mr Nathan is survived by his wife, daughter, son and three grandchildren. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones in this time of grief. If you would like to leave your tributes online, you may wish to do so on the following websites. Details of the funeral proceedings will also be available.

Yours sincerely,
Mic Tay
